House League Rule Tips

We are about half way done our house league season. Their are two common questions which I get from players and parents in regards to rules on a regular basis. They are as follows:

1. 6 Minute Penalty Rule

In the MMLA in House League we play with a 6 minute penalty rule. What this rule means is if a player has 6 minutes or more in penalties in one game he is not allowed to complete the game once the 6th minute has been incurred. Their is no suspension for not being able to finish that game and the player may return the next game.

2. The Penalty Shot Rule

In the MMLA if a penalty is called and that player can not fully serve the penalty because their is not enough time on the game clock in the last period a penalty shot will occur. This will happen for each penalty that falls into this situation. An example is player A takes a 2 minute high sticking penalty with 1:50 left on the game clock, a penalty shot is awarded to the other team since player A can not serve his full two minute penalty.

I hope this helps explain two confusing rules at times.

House League Notes

Week 2 of our 10 week House League program has now been completed. Tonight will be the start of week 3.

I thought I would take a couple of minutes to remind all parents and players of a few things:

1. Please arrive at your games early so you are ready to go at game time.

2. Please make sure you have your mouth guard. In the first two weeks we have had several players dressed without one. They are mandatory.

3. Please no playing with any balls anywhere in the arena except on the lacrosse floor.

4. Please no parents on the arena floor for ANY reason. This rule will be strictly enforced.

We had a great first week of games. We do have one PeeWee that is not balanced and steps will be taken this week to improve this team. Our Major Midget/Intermediate League will start tonight May 3, 2010.

Standing will be posted starting at the end of this week.

Please note next week is the first week of practices. Please check your schedule to find out when your times are. it is also picture week. Please arrive at your games 30 minutes before hand to have your pictures done.

As always if you have any questions or concerns please find me at the arena or feel free to email me at rob@cairns-clan.com

The 2010 Season Has Started

The 2010 Season has started. It has been a busy week but it has been great to see all the lacrosse players back on the floor. This week is a practice week just to get people back into the swing of things.

On Monday we kicked off the season with our Tyke/Novice Division. They were run through an amazing practice on the floor to get them used to playing with the ball, digging in the corners and passing and scooping the ball.

Tuesday the future Lacrosse stars the Peanuts were on the floor. I really enjoy them and they did a series of skill building exercises including a great game of Red Rover learning cradling skills at the same time.

After the Peanuts, the Bantam/Minor Midget took the floor last night for a great practice that was well run. The night was capped off by rewarding the boys with a penalty shot competition. The Bantam/Minor Midget division looks like it will be a great division to watch this year.

Tonight the PeeWee division takes the floor at 6:30pm for a 2 hour practice.

Tomorrow the Tyke/Novice have their 2nd hour on the floor this week with a practice.

A special thanks to all the parents who have stepped up to help in the arena and coach. Your help does make a difference.

2010 Season Update

Today is Friday. It is 4 days till the 2010 MMLA House League Season gets under way.

I would like to take the time to thank all the parents who have stepped up in the last few days to help coach our kids during the 2010 Season.

If you have not received a call about the 2010 season, please be patient. All calls should be completed by Saturday.

The 2010 House League Season and Ramblings

The 2010 MMLA House League is season is approaching rapidly. The Season starts Monday April 19, 2010 with the Tyke/Novice group kicking off the season with a practice at 7:30pm at Mt. Joy area. It is going to be great to see the kids and the stars of tomorrow back on the floor.

Week 1 of lacrosse this year is a practice week. It is a chance to get our kids back into the swing of things, back on the floor and playing the game they love so much.

Currently we are in the process of calling all players and most of these calls should be completed by Thursday night. The schedules will be up tonight sometime as well.

I would like to take this time to thank my fellow members of the executive for all their help in getting this year’s 2010 House League Season started, to all the people who have volunteered to coach or help out and to our parents/players for being supportive of our great organization. A special thank you goes out to my wife Kelli for contacting all the parent’s of our players so they know when our season starts.

If you are interested in getting involved – coaching or otherwise, please email Rob Cairns the House League Director at rob@cairns-clan.com

Speaking of Markham Lacrosse, did you know that two current Toronto Rock players played some of their minor lacrosse in Markham? If you did not know they are Scott Campbell and Creighton Reid. This Friday the Rock try and earn a playoff spot this year and a possible home playoff game as they play the Rochester Knighthawks. Go down to the ACC and support the Toronto Rock – Go Rock Go!!!!!!

That is about it for now. If anyone has any questions, concerns, or even if you want to learn a little more about the game, please stop and say hi at any MMLA event.

Coaches Needed For 2010 House League Season

The start of the 2010 House League Season is approaching very quickly. One thing that makes this game so special is the parents who offer to coach our youth. Coaches are needed in all divisions and no lacrosse experience is required. We will help teach you the great game that your youth love to play.

If you are interested in coaching for the 2010 House League Season, please contact our House League Director Rob Cairns.

Rob can be reached via email at rob@cairns-clan.com or by phone at 416-624-7647.
